Defend your defenseFlorence Jornsen
Genesis 34:1-2 AMP
Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out [unescorted] to visit the girls of the land. When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince (sheik) of the land, saw her, he kidnapped her and lay [intimately] with her by force [humbling and offending her].
Your defense needs to be defended so it can defend you. It’s another way to say beef up security. No soldier goes to war without self defense mechanism in place. They go fully armed from head to toe on every side. As a soldier of Christ, knowing that the world is a battle field you should arm yourself every day. Don’t compromise your defense system in any way. It’s easier to attack a single soldier outside the barrack without his uniform than attacking a battalion within the barrack. During communal crises people run into the barrack to find refuge because they believe the barrack is well defended.
Guard your body guard
Your body’s immune system, commonly called the body soldiers must also be defended before it can defend you against diseases. This is why you must be mindful of the substances you consume. There are drugs that can compromise your immune system and make you susceptible to diseases. People take immune boosters to help build and keep their immune system intact so it can carry out its function of defending the body against foreign body.
Be safety conscious
Defenseless, Dinah went out without escort, unprotected, unarmed to see the girls of the land. Being the only daughter in the midst of twelve boys, she must have been bored, so she needed to socialize, which was not a bad idea. However, she would have been wise enough to go with escorts. That was not a familiar environment and so was not safe for her to go socializing all alone. Attacking a stranger is a very common thing. Dinah was not safety conscious. This act cost her her virginity and the death of so many.
Fellowship is a Defense
The fellowship of believers, where two or three gather in his name guarantees the presence of God and it is a safe environment to thrive. Don’t go through life isolated from your brethren and divine presence. Build your fellowship. Dinah would have been defended in the midst of her family, she compromised her defense when she went out alone, associated with the wrong people and walked out of divine covering (fellowship of believers). These factors are very important in maintaining your defense system.
Cain knew the dangers of being defenseless; so he pleaded for mercy. Before he left God’s presence to settle in wandering land God put a mark on him to protect him from being attacked by anyone. (Genesis 4:13-16). Leaving God’s presence makes you defenseless, therefore to tighten your security, always dwell in God’s presence, fellowship regularly with believers and avoid wrong association.
Heavenly father, help me not to wander away from your presence. Amen!
