Understanding holinessFlorence Jornsen
1 Peter 1:15-16 15
” But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
What does it mean to be Holy?
You have probably heard a lot about Holiness – most of which would be quite confusing. Beyond the complex definitions that you have read, it is needful to state that the final authority on Holiness is God. God is holy. He does not have to do anything to gain Holiness. Holiness is His nature. God defined holiness in Leviticus 11:44-45 and exodus 22:31 as being set apart from a profane to a sacred use.
How can I be holy?
As humans, we have to be brought into God’s Holiness and given same nature. God plainly told his people whom he delivered from Egypt to sanctify themselves and be holy unto him. How does this apply to us today? We have been saved by grace through faith. The next thing after salvation is sanctification. Therefore, after you were delivered from the Egypt of unrighteousness, it is also important to be sanctified and made Holy unto God. You can receive sanctification by the Word of God. How can a young man keep his way clean? By heeding the word of God. Let us see that in scriptures: How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. Psalms 119:9 (NASB). The Bible is our Basic Instruction before Living Earth. We would be holy when we obey Bible’s instruction. How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word Psalms 119:9 (NLT).
How important is Holiness in Scriptures?
The Bible says, “Come out from amongst them, be separate, and touch not the unclean thing”. The Bible says, “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. The Bible says, lay up His word in your heart and put iniquity far from your tabernacle. It is very important that you distant yourself from iniquity as a Saint of God. The seal of His holiness does not permit you to mingle with sin. The Bible says, “Follow peace with all men and holiness without which no man shall see the lord”
Heavenly father, I hide your words in my heart that I might not sin against you. Let your word be my meditation day and night. Amen!
