Wall off woes with wallsFlorence Jornsen
Proverbs 25:28 AMP
Like a city that is broken down and without walls [leaving it unprotected] Is a man who has no self-control over his spirit [and sets himself up for trouble].
Woe befalls a city without walls, such a city is super exposed to rivalry attack. This case scenario raised a serious concern for Nehemiah as he lamented over the city of his father’s sepulcher whose walls were broken down. His concern was more for the living than the dead. He knew that they were no longer safe in their dwelling places, there could be a rival attack at any time. He needed to secure the city and so he embarked on the mission of rebuilding the walls. The walls would minimize their exposure to danger. Walling off woes is part of our daily mission as believers. A man’s enemy shall be a member of his household. ( Matthew 10:36) We must be spiritually sensitive and be on the guard at all times. The enemy is waiting to take advantage of your unguarded second to strike. Give no place to the devil and ensure that there is no crack on your wall. (Ephesians 4:27). Lack of self discipline or self control is the cause of the cracks on the wall and it widens as it goes and weakens until the center can no longer hold, then it falls apart. “A stitch in time saves nine” . Watch out for the cracks and amend them before they becomes a ruin.
Self control as seen from the text above is likened to the walls surrounding a city and protecting it from attack. The Bible says “woe to the world for temptation. It is necessary for temptation to come, but woe to that person through whom the temptation comes” ( Matthew 18:7) guess who that person is? The man without self control. He can’t wall off the woes of temptation and so he falls like the broken down walls. It takes resilience to exhibit self control, it is the fruit of the holy spirit, it’s in everyone filled with the holy spirit but it takes discipline to exhibit it. How do you react to anger and ridicule. Nehemiah was a man with self control, when he was ridiculed by Sanballat and Tobiah, he did not fight back. ( Nehemiah 4:10). His major concern was to Wall off the woes of his people. So, he was focused on the project, he appointed guards to keep off the enemies while they were building. He avoided all distractions. Without self discipline you can’t succeed in any mission.
Finally, would you want to wall off woes from your life and dwell safely in the land of your inheritance? Then build and rebuild every broken down wall with the spirit of self control. “Self control sets a boundary for you not to trespass so as to have a clean conscience before God and man. The walls will serve as deterrents to the woes”.
Heavenly father help me to exhibit the spirit of self control and temperance at all times. Amen!
